The old glass comes out with us, so you are not left standing over a broken windshield. On the job the old glass and the old adhesive bed are cut out, then the pinch weld is cleaned and prepped before fresh urethane is laid and the new glass is set. Mouldings, clips and cowl pieces have to come off to reach the glass; some are made to be reused and some are one-use parts. We will tell you which your vehicle takes.

That adhesive is structural, not a sealant — the windshield helps the body hold its shape and gives the passenger airbag something to push against, so the bond has to reach strength before the car is driven hard. What decides the wait is the specific adhesive used on your vehicle, along with the temperature and humidity that day. Your installer gives you the exact figure for the product on your job.

Rain on a cured installation is fine — the glass is bonded and sealed against water. What we ask you to hold off on is a high-pressure or brush car wash, where jets and bristles work directly at the edges of the glass and the fresh moulding line. Leave any retention tape where we put it until we say it can come off, and go easy on door slams while the cabin is sealed. Your installer will tell you what your job needs.

Yes, while it is still small. A chip is a break in the outer layer of laminated glass, and the pane flexes every time you hit a pothole, park in the sun, or run the defroster against cold glass. That movement is what turns a contained chip into legs that travel. Filling it with resin stabilises the break so it stops spreading. Expect the mark to stay faintly visible — a repair restores strength, it does not erase the damage.

Three things mostly: damage that runs to the edge of the glass, damage sitting in the driver's line of sight, and damage that has branched into long legs. The edge is where the glass carries load and holds its bond to the body, so a crack reaching it changes the structure. Resin also needs a clean break to wick into, and dirt, wax and water that have worked into older damage stop it filling properly. Damage through the inner layer is past filling too.

Back glass and side windows are tempered rather than laminated, so instead of cracking they break into small blunt fragments, and those fragments travel — seat seams, door cards, seat belt reels, carpet, the trunk and the defroster tracks. We clear the remaining glass out of the frame and clean up what we can reach, but pieces can keep surfacing as the car is used, so a thorough vacuum later is worth it. Cover the opening if the vehicle is sitting outside.

Glass damage is handled under the comprehensive part of your policy, not collision or liability, and comprehensive claims are generally treated differently from an at-fault accident.
